AR activist bomb hoax teen found guilty and sentenced to rehabilitation

A 16-yr old from Plymouth has been sentenced to a two year rehabilitation order by Plymouth Youth Court. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had admitted to several distributed denial of service cyber-attacks against SeaWorld in both Florida and Devon. SeaWorld estimated the attacks had cost them £353,000. He was also found guilty in July of sending bomb hoax threats to Delta Airlines and American Airlines.

One of the threats read: “One of those lovely Boeing airplanes has a tick, tick, ticking in it. Hurry gentlemen, the clock is ticking”

According to the BBC:

“The teenager was found guilty of two offences under the Criminal Law Act relating to the communication of bomb threats and pleaded guilty to three offences under Section 3 of the Computer Misuse Act relating to denial of service attacks.”

Judge Upholds Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act

On Wednesday 4th March, Judge Amy St. Eve upheld the constitutionality of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) at the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division.

In August 2013, two thousand mink were set free from a breeding farm in Morris, Illinois. Tyler Lang (then 25) and Kevin Olliff (then 27) were indicted on federal charges of damaging and interfering with the operation of the mink farm under AETA. When indicted, Olliff had already been arrested and was serving a prison sentence for possession of burglary tools in connection to previous mink-liberation activities.

Both men pleaded not guilty to the new charges and set about challenging the constitutionality of AETA. They claimed that AETA effectively criminalised free speech (sacrosanct under the US First Amendment)

Judge St Eve was quoted saying:

“AETA is directed at property damage, threats, and violence toward animal enterprise” and that the law’s history and rules of construction “unambiguously indicate that Congress did not intend for the AETA to infringe upon protected First Amendment speech.”

According to the National Association for Biomedical Research:

“AETA was enacted by Congress in 2006 in response to threats and violence towards individuals involved in research and since its enactment, the frequency and severity of illegal actions in the U.S. has decreased significantly.”

Five Dutch Activists Sentenced for Stealing Beagles

On the night of 9th April 2013 five animal rights activists from the Dutch group Anti-Dierproeven Coalitie (ADC), including the group’s co-founder Robert Molenaar, broke into a beagle breeding facility in Noord Brabant (Netherlands) and took six dogs which were destined for a pharmaceutical testing veterinary medicines. Shortly after, the thieves turned themselves into the police, though the dogs were not returned.

Animal Liberation Front strike in Toronto

On July 14th 2014, a Canadian animal rights activist working under the "Animal Liberation Front" umbrella injected a smelly liquid (butyric acid) into the carpets at the offices of the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science (CALAS). The acid, which has a smell of vomit, will be difficult to remove. Staff are reported to be shaken but unhurt.

A recent communique from the ALF reads:

On July 14, 2014, in Toronto, the Animal Liberation Front injected butyric acid into the office of the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science. CALAS is an organization made up of vivisectors that promotes animal research. The butyric acid will soak through the carpet and into the floorboards of their offices, and major repairs will be needed to get rid of the stench. Any building managers considering taking in CALAS as a tenant should be aware that unless you want something similar to happen in your offices, then think twice before doing business with these murderers. -ALF

The threat to do this to any office building which CALAS uses is an example of secondary targeting - attacking the clients (building landlord) of an institution which deals with animal research. The use of butyric acid is not new, anti-whaling group, Sea Shepherd, used it to disrupt Japanese whaling ships.

Italian Animal Rights Vandalism at the University of Milan

On Friday morning, scientists at the Pharmacological and Biomolecular Science Department at the University of Milan had a bad surprise. Someone wrote on the wall “VIVISECTORS ARE MURDERERS” (“Vivisettori Assassini” ) and poured red paint all over the buildings, breaking glass and throwing smelly “material” (possibly faecal matter) inside the building. The same happened in Via Viotti, at the Department of Medical Biotechnologies and Translational Medicine. It is not clear if there was a single target or it is a general attack towards all researchers.

This is not the first time that the University of Milan has been targeted. Back in April 2013, five animal rights activists forced entry inside the Pharmacology Department of Milan’s University. The activists barricaded themselves inside the facility, tying chains around their necks and the doors’ handles to prevent police from breaking in.They demanded that every animal in the facility should be released – about a thousand rats and seventeen rabbits - meanwhile they removed the animals’ information tags, rendering them effectively useless and throwing away years of research about Parkinson’s, Multiple sclerosis, autism and such. In an effort to prevent injuries to the people involved, the director of the department started negotiations that ended with the release about a hundred mice and rats and a rabbit.

Red paint daubed across office of cage manufacturer

On April 27th 2014, during World Week for Animals in Laboratories, extremists in Oregon, USA, daubed red paint across the front doors and walls of the sales office of Carter2 Systems Inc, a lab animal cage manufacturer and supplier.

The action was reported by an anonymous communique to the Bite Back website, and independently verified.

The red paint was meant to symbolise "the blood of the millions of nonhuman animals". The action was done in solidarity with Gateway To Hell campaign, which has campaigned against the transportation of primates across the world. Carter2 Systems is located close to Oregon National Primate and Research Center, which has been subject to many animal rights campaigns over the years, and the attack on Carter2 Systems was apparently done in solidarity with those campaigns.
