Nine animal rights activists were in court on earlier this month charged with a mix of assault, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. The members of South Florida Smash HLS were arrested on 30th October 2013 during a protest outside a breeding facility in Miami.

Activists blockaded the entrance to the facility, pounding on vehicles as they entered. A delivery van and its driver were hassled and blocked on its way in, and was then blocked when it tried to leave. This quickly escalated with activists throwing rocks at the vehicle, climbing on the van, blocking the driver’s vision. Further acts of violence resulted in the wing mirrors and windshield wipers being torn off, while the driver and passenger feared for their own safety.
