Professor Colin Blakemore appeared on BBC Radio 4’s The Report last night, interviewed by Melanie Abbot about his experience at the hands of animal activists, and his views on the covert surveillance of these groups by the police. The programme, framed in the context of the recent controversies surrounding the Stephen Lawrence investigation, focuses on undercover police officers, the history of Special Branch’s covert unit, the psychological effect of undercover work on the officers involved, and whether undercover surveillance is an appropriate police power.
