A Swedish farmer who applied for a permit to start farming minks has reported that he has been threatened with an axe thrown through his window. This was followed by a letter where he was threatened that he would experience worse things if he followed through with his permit application. A group labeling themselves as Animal Rights Militia has claimed responsibility for the attack. The farmer’s sister has also received threats through a letter, a threat that was emphasized when she received a bottle filled with gasoline in a sock. In addition, an accountant, working for the farmer, had his house attacked with “fire bombs” that were thrown against the window at his home. According to the farmer he is not the only one that has been targeted. Several mink farming applicants have received threats and attacks. The Swedish mink farm industry has for a long time been scaled down but has recently rebound due to strong Chinese demand. This has led to several new applications for permits to start mink farming. This is not appreciated by animal rights activists. Several demonstrations has been staged at mink farms and in some cases led to confrontations between farmers and activists. The attacks against the applying mink farmers have been reported to the police.
