Activists attempt to break into animal research lab

On the night of Saturday 9th February, unidentified activists gained access to the Istituto Oncologico Veneto animal facility in Padua, Italy. They were unsuccessful in any attempts to open animal enclosures, fleeing the facility after their intrusion tripped the alarms. Reports suggest they forced their way into a back door of the facility.

This comes 10 months after activists broke into the animal facility at the University of Milan and mixed up the animals in their cages – rendering years of work useless. The activists had broken into a back door by force and eventually carried off around 100 rodents from the facility. Politicians have started to speak up against extremism, particularly after death threats against a patient, Caterina Simonsen, who had dared to speak up in support of animal research. This included the potential future Italian leader Matteo Renzei.
